Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has notified knitwear units in the city to install bio-teach plants, to treat the detergent utilised in washing apparels produced by the units or else they will have to face stringent action.
During the first phase of their action, the board had notified almost 75 firms in Ludhiana, who as per PPCB were creating pollution by making use of synthetic detergents.
It was found that, the biological oxygen demand (BOD) in the water outside these plants was higher than the permitted limits. The defaulters were called for a hearing last week, however, the same was postponed for a later date.
Representatives led by Knitwear Club President, Vinod Thaper, has currently urged the Executive Engineer, RP Goyal for some more time before the stringent action is taken.
Goyal on the other hand, has directed the unit owners to install the bio-tech plants or face strict action by the board.
