Heriot-Watt University informed that the handle of a fabric, which is typically a very subjective aesthetic property, has been successfully characterised in an objective manner using the Kawabata Evaluation System for Fabrics (KESF) by researchers of the Hometex project.
Working in close collaboration with local companies, cashmere fabric samples have been characterised using the KESF and the results used to calculate an 'overall handle rating'.
Experts from the collaborating companies were asked to rank the handle of fabrics and a formula was devised, incorporating the subjective assessment as well as the measured KESF values together.
The outcome was an objective rating, which was found to correlate extremely well with the subjective assessment of cashmere experts from the collaborating companies.
This means that it may be soon possible to objectively rate cashmere handle from simple instrumental measurements rather than from subjective appraisals.
