The Indian Institute of Management's textile technology department has demanded a 17 crore grant from the department of science and technology for research and development of smart textiles.
The institute is planning to set up a research facility on the campus by drawing an additional grant of Rs3 crore from the industry.
The present work on smart textiles undertaken by the institute includes textile technologies like self-cleansing, thermo-regulation, odor resistant garment and many others that are essentially used as filters for automotive industry.
With Government assistance, textile industry can be developed and technology will be scaled up for commercialization of the products.
Moreover, an IIT team headed by experts from renowned institutes has also started working for the development of ophthalmic implants using some of the nano-materials.
This project, resulting from two years of hard work, is largest of its kind for IIT Delhi not only in terms of Finance but also in terms of involvement by the industry.
