Traditional fashion revived with hand-woven fabrics

Fashion designers today specialise in a particular fabric for designing an exclusive ensemble on handwoven fabrics eagerly sought after by fashion aficionados.

Today, fashion is about dedicated designers focusing on creativity in particular direction.

Designer Bela Shanghvi, President, Crafts' Council of Maharashtra, belongs to Gujarat and Patan and it was natural for her to specialises in patola weave of Patan and the craft has gained considerable popularity.

Pria Kataria Puri is another designer specialising in embroidery and colour on hand-woven fabric. Her creations are colourful with embroidery work in mirror, shells and beads having contemporary as well as ethnic, in feel and look.

She feels that to keep this traditional craftsmanship alive is her obligation.

Puri has been honoured with awards like Bharat Yuva Ratna Award and Bharat Vikas Award.

Designer Neeru Kumar has made khadi her choice. She has turned the humble khadi and cotton into chic outfits for celebrities as Sonia Gandhi, Rekha and Shabana Azmi.

Her clothes embellished with natural colours, kantha work, applique and embroidery with the handmade cloth giving a warmer and personal touch to the fabric.

Asma Hussain, Lucknow-based designer specialises in jamdanis, an ancient form of silk weaving whose creation consumes a lot of time to make.

She says a metre of jamdani could cost upto Rs one lakh, but introducing new methods and techniques has helped to lower the cost considerably.

Asma Hussain has also involved herself in making pashmina popular.
