Inspired by the insects of the world, Rimi Nayak's quaintly titled collection “Insect in My Closet” was a fashionable stylish study of construction at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012.
Bringing in the contrasts of the insects body onto the garments; Rimi cleverly created fluidity and structure in an interesting manner. The colour palette was wide and varied with green, pink, blue, heightened by glistening black and gold.
Embroidery reflected the tactile tentacles of ants, while block and digital printing techniques brought the inspiration to life on the creations. Beautiful khadi, tussore, crepe, georgette and silk Lurex formed the fabric base for the innovatively designed collection.
A sari sprinkled with tiny insect motifs worn with an extended shoulder choli opened the show. The print of the inspiration appeared for long maxi dresses, some with sober collars and cuffs or cut-out shoulders. Layered dresses, some stylish drapes, an imposing jacket with scaled long sleeves and an almost futuristic darkly robotic creation ended the show.
Cowls appeared on sides of skirts, as front drapes or trailing from the rear hemlines. The outfits had some few intricate details but when devoid of prints, the insect motif appeared in the form of striking brooches which were pinned on lapels or shoulders.
For fashion and style that moves off the beaten path, Rimi Nayak's “Insect in My Closet” collection will be a great conversation piece anywhere.
