Drawing from the earthy inspirations of India’s culture and rich heritage, the Marg collection by Soumitra Mondal at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013 was a fashionable amalgamation of art and weaving traditions.

Buckets of red roses lined the ramp and there was a fragrance in the air as the beautiful tribute to Indian khadi began.

Pretty as a garden of roses the women’s wear line in beautiful shades of ivory, white and rani pink was regal and elegant in style and construction.

The finely woven khadi silk and the wide range of Jamdani fabrics were turned into utterly feminine creations.

Adding elements of different weaves and needlework techniques, Soumitra confirmed his skill in presenting eye-catching ethnic wear which will appeal to both the Indian as well as global woman.

Khadi never looked more serene and elegant as it did for Soumitra’s creations. White saris had tonal or pink butties, flared pants were topped with kurtas, long Anarkalis were over minis and the tiered maxi with embroidered bodice was a welcome change. To give a contrast, an empire line short dress was teamed with wide pants.

In the pink section, saris were more vibrant and bold as checks and weaves worked well together. Tiny long sleeve shrugs looked great with ankle length creations and the Granny dress with long sleeves had a pink inner that turned it into a fashion hit.

To match the mood of the show, Soumitra accessorised the collection with ornate Kaan Phool which covered the ears and had a ring of roses for the high chignon hairstyles sported by the models.

When it comes to showing khadi, the fabric launched by the Father of the Nation, in all its glory, Soumitra Mondal has been an expert in its promotion for several years.
