At the pre-convocation student's conference held at National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, Gujarat, today, emphasis was laid on design playing an important role in the borderless world.

In his opening remarks, Dr Darlie O Koshy, ICSID Board Member, Director, NID, stressed on the concept of 'design economy' and called upon young designers to valueadd through 'societal innovations', 'design elitism' and 'design democracy'.

Making a power point presentation about India's growing economy and citing recent statistics on the growing consumerism, hinting at consumer durable and automobile sectors among others, Koshy opined that designers should be innovative and must ensure success of the mantra 'designed-manufactured-served from India.'

Ms Dilki de Silva, Secretary General, International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), in her address called upon young NID designers to use the platform provided by her institution and explore new avenues and partnerships that will serve the community at large.

ICSID is a global not-for-profit organisation that promotes better design around the world. It has over 150 members from more than 50 countries, representing an estimated 150,000 designers.

ICSID President–Elect and Director, DuocUC, Mr Carlos Hinrichsen from Chile gave a wonderful presentation on how his institution partnered with Nokia starting a successful institution–industry partnership called Only Planet Chile 2005 that impacted the academic scenario and developed connectivity proposals for the global mobile and telecommunications giant.
