The Government has taken the decision to impose an 'Import Duty' on all leather and leather related products commercially brought in to the country. This initiative was implemented with the vision of protecting the local leather manufactures and further to expand their demand at the local market.

This was stated by the Minister of Rural Industries & Self-Employment Promotion S.B. Navinna while participating as the chief guest at a ceremony in Welimada in Badulla in declaring a new village as a centre for lather products manufacturing.

Further explaining the steps taken by his Ministry to enhance the market for the rural industrial products, Minister Navinna said that plans have already been sketched to expose the market for products manufactured locally.

Initially a new building will be constructed in Battaramulla, 'Jana Kala Centre' to open up a stall for local industrial products. The Minister said that under the patronage of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa several measures have been taken to ensure the smooth function of the local industrial manufacturing process and its market along with additional facilities and benefits to the manufacturers.

Minister Navinna commenting on the expected goals said these programmes will be introduced as self employment programmes in villages island-wide.
