Kevin M. Burke, president and CEO, of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) welcomed the introduction of legislation by U.S. Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) that would support efforts to aid the world's least developed nations.
The legislation – the New Partnership for Development Act of 2007 (NPDA) – would reduce duties on imports of apparel and footwear from the world's poorest countries, many of which are in Africa.
The legislation also provides capacity-building resources and creates other incentives for market-based and sustainable economic growth.
“The NPDA empowers least developed nations with tangible market access and predictability – the building blocks for economic development and investment,” said Kevin M. Burke, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA).
“It is important that this bill addresses the crucial issue of infrastructure capacity, through an Aid for Trade Fund, to support the potential and growing domestic industries within these countries,” Burke continued.
“I look forward to working with Congress as it considers the NPDA, which promises hope and a way out of poverty for millions.”
