Spray-on fabrics to change face of fashion industry

Smooth fabric can now be sprayed on skin as well as other surfaces to create garments, medical dressing materials and textile upholstery fabrics for furniture. This will be exhibited on 16th September, ahead of the Spray-on fashion show, which is going to be held next week at the Imperial College of London.

Dr Manel Torres – the Spanish fashion designer and the academic visitor at Imperial College, along with the Professor of Particle Technology from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Paul Luckham crafted a smooth, unblemished clothing material identified as Fabrican Spray-on fabric which can be released straightaway into the body using aerosols or sprays. The spray-on fabric immediately gets dehydrated to create new fabric which can be cleansed and used again.

Dr Torres will show the functioning of the spray-on fabric on models by creating apparels right from the fabric stage. Through this, he will try to illustrate the way in which this technology can be used in the fashion industry.

This spray-on fabric is made up of small fibres which are mixed with polymers to join the fibres collectively, and a solvent that releases the fabric in liquid, disappears as soon as the spray touches the surface.

An aerosol can or a high pressure spray gun is generally used to release the spray. The texture of the cloth can be altered in response to the fibres that are being used like linen, acrylic or wool, and also in the way, in which the spray has been released.

The use of spray-on fabric in fashion industry is a unique way of marketing the idea. It can also be applied in other fields like transport, chemical and medical industries. For instance, the spray-on fabric can be used for applying dressings on the burnt skin without exerting much pressure or for spraying medicines straightaway to an injury.
