The Centre for Arts and Technology is pleased to announce that Fashion Design and Merchandising student, Mitchell Gilroy, was chosen as one of the top 25 finalists for Canada's Breakthrough Designers competition, presented by Télio.

Canada's Breakthrough Designers is an annual design competition which showcases up-and-coming fashion designers in Canada while preparing them for the commercial realities of the industry. The finalists are invited to Montréal to present their garment on a runway during Montréal Fashion Week in February, and will be competing for one of five scholarships offered by Télio, totaling $15,000.

This year, Mitchell will be the only student representing Atlantic Canada. “I was in absolute disbelief when I found out I was a finalist, but now I am very excited to get started and represent Halifax,” said Mitchell. Upwards of 500 participants submitted sketches of their garment design for this year's theme, Rouge + Red.

“I see red as a contradictory colour. It can be a colour of passion and love, but it can also translate into a fierce and dangerous colour, which is what I based my design around. I submitted a transformable piece which can be worn as a jacket, a dress, or 30 other ways.”

Mitchell is in his second year of the Fashion Design and Merchandising program at the Centre for Arts and Technology. The program - offered in Halifax, NS and Kelowna, BC - focuses on garment design for the commercial fashion industry and includes extensive study in business, finance, merchandising, and retail.

The Centre for Arts and Technology is a digital media based post-secondary institute with three campuses in Fredericton, Halifax, and Kelowna. The Centre's certificate and diploma programs offer preparation for careers in Animation, Digital Filmmaking, Audio Engineering, Digital Photography, Event and Promotions Management, Graphic and Digital Media Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Network Security, and other emerging entertainment industry and information technology careers.
