Shunning their previous status of being a mere institution or building displaying and conserving artefacts of scientific, artistic, cultural or historical value, museums these days are also emerging as a popular medium to feature rare fashion collections.

For example, the Ebony Fashion Fair, going on at Chicago History Museum or New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity exhibition, both these events highlight the increased demand of museums as venues to display fashion exhibits.

Following the trend is the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris, which is soon going to organize a summer exhibition titled The Mechanics of Underwear, displaying several lingerie pieces collected from various innerwear enthusiasts from all around the world.

The expansive list of exhibits will include around 38 antique corsets, sourced from a Vancouver-based firm Lace Embrace Atelier, belonging to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The pieces were being painstakingly bought from auctions and private sales by the company’s owner and an avid lingerie collector as well as designer Melanie Talkington, whose impressive clientele includes the likes of burlesque dancer Dita von Teese and Cathie Jung.
