in 1889, kanebo director toyosaburo kuwagata began searching for an appropriate design for the company's crest on paper lanterns. he then noticed six cross-section drawings of spindles in a british document on spinning machines. of the six drawings, the one that appealed to him most happened to resemble the insignia of the tokyo cotton trading company, kanebo's predecessor. this design evolved into the present company emblem.
