Beauty and Personal Care Solutions provider Dow Corning announces that, nearly 20 years ago, silicone elastomers revolutionized the skin care industry with their unique combination of skin feel (silky, smooth, powdery), thickening properties, and ability to delivery active ingredients.
The original product was an elastomer powder prepared by cryogenic grinding of cured silicone elastomer.
Several years after that, a more successful elastomer powder was made by suspension polymerization. This product, now called Dow Corning 9506 Powder, was followed by elastomer pastes composed of silicone elastomers swollen by solvents such as cyclomethicone (e.g. Dow Corning 9040 Silicone Elastomer blend).
Subsequent development work has produced silicone elastomers containing functional substituents as well as elastomers where other solvents are used.
Additional refinements in processing have produced silicone elastomer blends with different rheology profiles, solvent-absorbing capacities and particle sizes. All this has led to a proliferation of elastomer products from Dow Corning and other silicone manufacturers.
Today, dozens of different silicone elastomers are available, and global sales are estimated to be well in excess of $30MM per year.
Dow Corning provides performance-enhancing solutions to serve the diverse needs of more than 25,000 customers worldwide.
The Dow Chemical Company and Corning, Incorporated equally own a global leader in silicon-based technology and innovation, offering more than 7,000 products and services, Dow Corning. More than half of Dow Corning's annual sales are outside the United States.
