Project Alabama creates garments from recycled materials

Fourth Annual International Design Conference, Tasmeem Doha 2007, which concluded yesterday held at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQ) in partnership with the Ministry of Civil Service Affairs and Housing, and Qatar Foundation.

The four-day event started on March five, featured 16 international speakers who have made their mark in their respective fields. The last day of the conference saw presentations by noted designers.

Among the various speakers Natalie Chanin who is best known for her work as co-founder and designer of Project Alabama was present.

The Project Alabama is known for its ornately embellished and completely hand-sewn garments, made from recycled materials by local artisans and sold in stores across the world.

Today, Natalie runs a company named Alabama Chanin, which enrolls local artisans for their craftsmanship and strives to bring a modern perspective to age-old techniques.

Chanin also creates projects that reflect a wide range of disciplines, from sustainable clothing and home furnishings to a limited edition jewellery line.
