Students and graduates of the Royal College of Art (RCA) have worked with London 2012 Olympics over the past eight months to design the official London 2012 Victory Ceremonies podia and ceremonial costumes.

Tom Crisp (MA Fashion Menswear, 2012), Trine Hav Christensen (MA Fashion Womenswear, 2012) and Zara Gorman (MA Fashion Womenswear – Millinery, 2010) created the ceremonial costumes to be worn by approximately 100 female Games Maker volunteer athletes and presenter escorts and 200 male Games Maker volunteer flower and medal bearers.

Forty podia, designed by Gaetano Ling (MA Innovation Design Engineering (IDE), 2011), Hong-Yeul Eom (MA IDE, 2011), Luc Fusaro (MA IDE, 2012), Heegun Koo (MA IDE, 2011) and Yan Lu (MA IDE, 2011), will be used across all the Victory Ceremonies and approximately 4,400 athletes will stand on them to receive their victory medals.

For fashion designers Tom Crisp and Trine Hav Christensen the last few months have been particularly busy, having almost literally come straight from their gala Show Fashion 2012 on 31 May to the costumes and podia launch. When designing the costumes the students were inspired by Greek mythology as well as British heritage. Milliner Zara Gorman took her inspiration from the architecture of the iconic London 2012 sporting venues as well as aspects of classic British tailoring and sportswear.

Innovation design engineer Luc Fusaro can't quite relax just yet – his final show takes place 20 June – 1 July at Show RCA 2012. Together, Luc and his fellow designers created a strikingly modern twist on the victory podia of yesteryear, using dynamic lines representing the energy that the Games and athletes represent.

The costumes and podia will be used across 805 Victory Ceremonies taking place in over 30 London 2012 venues. Taking place soon after a medal event finishes, the design of the Victory Ceremonies has been created to be an exciting celebration of the achievements of every medal-winning athlete.

'It's fantastic that Royal College of Art students have had so much involvement with the London 2012 Games – from creating artworks from recycled hoarding from the Olympic Park site in 2008 to the stunning costumes and podia being unveiled', said Professor Wendy Dagworthy, Dean of the School of Material.

'This really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these highly talented young designers, and a great way to showcase British design education to a global audience. 2012 is proving to be an exciting year for us in so many ways – especially as we also celebrate our 175th anniversary this year.'
