The Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), which now runs only diploma courses, is mulling over collaboration with UK-based fashion designing institutes to start degree courses, institute Director Vishav Bandhu informed media after an official interaction with a UK Trade and Investment body representative.

The institute, established and run by the Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Punjab, now offers diploma courses in fashion design (knits), garment manufacturing technology, fashion and textile design, design in leather apparel and accessories, and fashion marketing and management.

Mr. Bandhu said they have urged UK Trade and Investment Director Barry Lowen to help NIIFT ink collaboration deals with various UK designing institutes.

According to Mr. Bandhu, the main benefit of associating with the UK-based institutes is that NIIFT students would get better exposure to global arenas of fashion technologies. Also, this would help them upgrade their course curriculum in lines with that of international fashion technology institutes.

The Indian institute already runs a student’s exchange program in association with UK’s Birmingham based Walsall college, he informed.

Having around 400 students, NIIFT runs three centres – one each in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali –  and has obtained Punjab Technical University’s affiliation to run the fashion technology courses.
