Alexander Ruth, a graduate of MA Costume Design for Performance has been awarded the prestigious Linbury Prize for Stage Design. This Biennial Prize, for which hundreds apply internationally, is the most important of its kind in the UK and brings together the best of emerging designers with professional theatre, dance and opera companies.

Alexander, who won the Stage Design category, has been commissioned to design a production for the Scottish Dance Theatre – the piece will be choreographed by Fleur Darkin and is called Room.

In the prize’s entire 27 year history this is the first time a student focused exclusively on costume design has been selected to enter the competition, which then saw him exceed expectations by becoming a winner. Alexander’s achievement paves the way for future costume designers, making it a major accomplishment for himself and MA Costume Design for Performance.

Agnes Treplin, Course Director of MA Costume Design for Performance said, “We are all extremely proud of him as this is the most prestigious stage design competition in the UK and puts LCF at the forefront of performance design. Alexander has won against competitors from renowned performance design courses from all over the country”

Although Alexander only graduated in February of this year, he has displayed his MA work at World Stage Design alongside some of the best designers in the world and is teaching on BA Costume for Performance and MA Fashion Futures.
