A fashion institute and a production house are in the pipeline in order to promote young and upcoming designers and to attract buyers from the local community. It is a Government effort to widen the economy which is primarily energy-based.
Coco Velvet International Fashion and Model Management, chief executive creative director, Christopher Nathan exclaimed that fashion was a highly profitable industry worldwide.
Nathan informed that there was talent in abundance in Trinidad and Tobago that would make sure that the international attention is focused and Port-of-Spain becomes fashion capital of the Caribbean.
The start is being made with the opening of of Fashion Technology of Trinidad and Tobago (IFTT) to be established at the new Wallerfield campus of the University of Trinided and Tobago. New York City's Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has been requested to help out the institute in its strive for success.
As per plan, Trinidad and Tobago could have the institute by 2008 if all goes as per the plans. The subjects include fashion, costume, accessories, textile/surface and interior design, fashion directing and styling and so on.
Nathan informed that graduates work will be showcased directly in the Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week giving them the much needed exposure. Proposed setting up of drag mall in Port-of-Spain will give trained designers the space to introduce their own designs.
