NIFT center to provide global exposure to Himachal costumes

Other than conserving the traditional mode of wearing costumes, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), proposed to be set up in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, will also provide a stand for research and innovation to attract attention from an international audience to the traditional costumes of the North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

This branch of NIFT, is the first to be set up in Northern India along with 12 other NIFT centre's spread across India. It is to be set up at a cost of Rs 600 million and intends to set a benchmark for those students who pass out through the centre.

Foundation stone laying ceremony for NIFT Kangra Centre was held on January 21 and state government has handed over the land. Courses to be started are fashion design, fashion communication, accessory design, textile design and fashion technology. A “Centre for Apparel & Textile Studies (CATS)” to offer PHD Program is also proposed to be set up at the Kangra Centre and session will start from August, 2009.

The centre is expected to provide a global exposure to the rich traditional costumes of the locals along with that to ornaments and woolen clothes. The students would trained in the field of design, management and technology.
