“This is why we are giving them the opportunity to obtain ample information at the 'Messe Frankfurt Against Copying' campaign stand. By joining forces with customs authorities, manufacturers have a reliable partner on their side in the battle against product piracy. Over 700 well-known holders of industrial property rights already benefit from our vast experience. With, as our statistics demonstrate a high degree of success,” he said.
Katharina Schäfer, from the German Patent and Trademark Office, also stresses the need to act now.
“Every year, trade and industry lose billions of euros through product piracy. The only way to ensure effective protection against copyists is through the systematic use of industrial property rights. This is why the German Patent and Trademark Office welcomes the Messe Frankfurt campaign and is happy to lend it its full support,” Katharina said.
Prof. Rido Busse, who fell victim to product pirates himself many years ago and has been chairman of the 'Plagiarius' campaign ever since, warns, “Product and brand piracy needs to bestripped of its 'harmless' image and to be seen for what it really is: unscrupulous white-collar crime. German companies suffer enormous losses, ranging from falling sales and loss of market share to brand credibility damage and unjustified product liability claims.”
The new campaign is to be launched at the forthcoming Heimtextil trade fair which takes place from 11 to 14 January 2006. Representatives of the partner organizations will be present at a special campaign stand to answer questions from exhibitors and trade visitors about brand and product protection.
