Mango opens first store in New York

Spanish fashion chain Mango has opened its first store in New York on 8,000-square-foot space on lease at 561 Broadway in SoHo, according to the sources.

The company, which has led to 878 stores in 80 countries, was looking for retail space in Manhattan for many years, particularly focused on Fifth Avenue.

North America, plays an important role in the company's expansion, opened its five stores in Canada last year. It said it would open more 25 stores in Canada by 2010.

The company has faced some difficulties to position itself in the US than competitors such as Zara and Hennes & Mauritz, which have established beachheads in several US cities.

Mango's first unit opened in Santa Monica, Calif., in November. The company has planned stores for Los Angeles; San Francisco and Costa Mesa, Calif.; San Juan, Puerto Rico; McLean, Va., and Bellvue, Wash. It intends to have 200 to 250 stores in the US by the end of the decade.

Mango is a prestigious multinational company dedicated to the design, manufacture and marketing of clothing garments and accessories for women. It has over 5,800 employees, 1,500 of which work at the company's central offices in Palau-Solità i Plegamans (Barcelona).

Currently, the company has more than 850 stores in 81 countries located on the five continents. The expansion is continuing with the entry into countries such as China, Italy and Australia.
