Northumbria University's Fashion and Fashion Marketing students have had exceptional success at this year's Graduate Fashion Week in London.
Northumbria takes gold:Top accolade – the River Island Gold Award – went to 24 year old Northumbria Fashion Design student James Lawrence, from Hull, for his high quality menswear collection, entitled 'twist'. The Gold Award goes to the best collection of the whole show, and James takes away a £20,000 prize.
David Chantry, Northumbria's Menswear specialist tutor said: “This is one of the best collections that I have seen in my 10 years at Northumbria's School of Design. The cut and detailing are paramount in menswear. James' skilful cutting, sophisticated use of colour and beautiful accessorising has created a collection that is cohesive, contemporary and commercial. In fact, one of the judges from a leading London designer store commented that this collection 'could go into a shop and be sold immediately'.
Alan Scott, Programme Leader, Fashion Design, added: “James demonstrated the professionalism and calibre of a modern fashion student from Northumbria today. He sets the quality standards and work ethic for others to aspire to. Totally committed and extremely talented – a star is born.”
James said: “I am overwhelmed and ecstatic to have won this award. Two other menswear collections were also highly commended, so for mine to win was like a dream come true. It really just makes all of the hard work, long hours and late nights of the past few months really worthwhile. I now plan to take a well earned rest and think about how to go forward, as I have a number of options to consider, including working for Abercrombie in the USA, or returning to study an MA in Fashion.”
