The misconception many foreigners have on select shops is that department stores are much better. In some case, this may be so, but in most cases, to reach a wider range of clients and to be able to get the press coverage, placing ones brand within a select shop is much of an advantage.
Balenciaga has announced that they will establish Balenciaga Japan in a joint venture with Restir, a high-class select shop.
This news surprised the industry as most foreign companies tie up with trade companies to establish their Japanese company. But Restir's understanding of the Balenciaga brand as they had been doing business together for awhile, had wined the hearts of Balenciaga.
Visiting department stores in Japan would be an experience of its own; visiting the select shops in Japan would be an experience that could not be found in any other store.
