The number of stores are limited for most and their volume very low. The name select shop explains their selectiveness in terms of consumers and products. Each product will sold as a exclusive style, or a product that has premium value, hence each will be in low volume and although some have great sales, they are not large enough to join in the rankings.
Some say the Japanese economy is recovering, others say consumption is rising, but as every analyst have different views, no one can say for exact what is going to happen. Still, some retailers are seeing consumption of their high-end goods rising and just as the ranking shows, most are seeing that low-priced retailers are the last ones laughing.
Either way, with Uniqlo starting to chase trends whilst maintaining their price and Aeon is working hard on their merchandising to better their image, what would be the point of going to high-end retailers and spending half your salary when you can purchase a similar item with decent (sometimes better) quality? How far high end retailers can keep going with their brand name will be an interesting marketing observation from henceforth.
