New Look, one of the UK's leading fashion retailers, has recalled around 1,000 pairs of its Bonbon shoe from sale after an out-of-court settlement with Jimmy Choo, the designer footwear brand.
Earlier, the latter had threatened New Look with legal action for copying, under new European legislation that makes it easier to protect original designs.
Prior to the new legislation, one had to prove that an item of clothing or footwear was identical, which is close to impossible.
Now the new legislation allows people to take an aspect of design, such as a quirky buckle or a heel, and to show that it has been copied.
In addition to the recalling, New Look is also likely to pay £80,000 to cover alleged damage to Jimmy Choo's reputation, infringement of its intellectual property right and legal costs.
