Launch of Gucci brand's outlet last week in up-market Ginza district of Tokyo was noted by retailers worldwide.

Outlet is decorated with rosewood and travertine, and it consists of three handbag sections, two jewellery sections, apparel sections for ladies and gents, a cafe, an art gallery and a hall.

Price of land area for the store has been $12,753 per square foot, which is a costly investment by the brand in retail space. Ginza outlet's importance is that the luxury retailers have resorted to department store tactics.

CEO of Gucci brand, Mark Lee informed that initially company planned to have two floors for retail sales and corporate offices in remaining area, but he decided to keep the entire space for retail when he took charge last year.

He said Gucci aims at profits and brand promotion, adding that Ginza store's vertical infrastructure enabled to position both cafe and gallery at the top.

Lee further said that a major purpose of opening this store is to present the most luxurious perspective of his brand. He said Japan is the top national market for Gucci in terms of retail sales and volume, which accounted for 22 percent of world returns last year.

Rich leather handbags are exhibited near the outlet's entrance, while less expensive canvas bags are kept on the second floor. Here the act of buying is referred to as 'the selling ceremony'.

Ginza flagship is expected to start bringing profits within 2007.
