The Indian gem and jewellery industry has launched a joint initiative titled 'Romance of India' to strengthen trade relations with Japan, the world's second largest market for diamonds, on the eve of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the country.

India's Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) will collaborate with the Japanese firm Taj Enterprise, in association with Tokyo Kiho, one of Japan's largest jewellery distributors, to showcase Indian jewellery at approximately 50 event-based sales and promotions exhibitions in Japan.

This includes the International Jewellery Tokyo (IJT) exhibition where the range of jewellery will be showcased along with a host of other events.

“The principal objective is to increase the awareness of Indian craftsmanship and manufacturing skills among Japanese consumers and thus enhance the image of Indian jewellery in Japanese markets,” said GJEPC Chairman Sanjay Kothari.

In 2007, the 50th year of Indo-Japanese friendship, the Indian government along with a few trade bodies will conduct various programmes to promote Indian brands and merchandise in Japan.

As part of the undertaking, the GJEPC will also hold promotional events like cultural shows and fashion shows.
