Cabinet approves 4 NIDs on the lines of NID Ahmedabad

Under National Design Policy, the Government has approved setting up of four new National Institutes of Design (NID) on the lines of NID Ahmedabad, during the 11th Five Year Plan on Thursday.

Plans are also afoot to begin the process to grant "deemed University" or "University Status" for the purpose of awarding degrees for the proposed NIDs and the same could be set up in partnership with private players.

Establishment of Departments of Design in all Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institute of Technology as well as in prestigious private colleges of engineering and architecture is also encouraged by the policy.

In order to govern registration of design professionals, a Chartered Society of Designers on lines of Institution of Engineers and Medical Council is also envisaged.

The policy also suggests setting up of India Design Council with eminent personalities of the industry as members.
