“The Triennale's decision to welcome the Giorgio Armani exhibition is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest exponents of modern design culture. Each item of clothing or accessory by Giorgio Armani is the outcome of a design philosophy built on creativity, planning and industrial production: a coherent process in which artistic inspiration and practical functions are intertwined. Visitors to the exhibition will derive great pleasure from discovering the conceptual depth and meticulous workmanship that underlie the clean silhouettes and elegant restraint of his aesthetic”, comments the President of the Triennale Davide Rampello.
Robert Wilson, celebrated stage director and visual artist, has conceived an original display specifically for this exhibition and has transformed the modern spaces of the Triennale into a series of panoramas, dividing the flow of the exhibition into two primary concepts that correspond to the two floors occupied by the space.
The first floor of the exhibition progresses along a linear sequence. In the geometric and formal rooms a succession of different sets follow one another: an abstract forest achieved with luminescent bamboo canes, an illuminated space transformed into its negative image, interplay of vertical lines and shadows, a room of mirrors exuding glamour.
On the ground floor the sequence is no longer linear. The progression around a central fulcrum – featuring a display of embroidered and translucent dresses – becomes intentionally and deliberately chaotic, with zones exhibiting still-life installations that encapsulate the numerous themes of the collections on view.
