The FDCI and Lakme are gearing up for the forthcoming fashion weeks beginning March 21 with interest level for both events pretty low, both from the point of view of media coverage as well as enthusiasm shown from fashion conscious public.
Media was a buzz and fashion news was spread across every channel and newspaper with fashion designers becoming celebrities overnight, the year when fashion week rolled out.
Today international buyers are unable to decide which fashion week to attend with FDCI yet to find an associate sponsor. Lakme may have a well-organised event, with great parties for luring big names.
FDCI is a more respected fashion event which has stalwarts of Indian fashion in support and big international buyers like Didier Grumbach of YSL having attended it.
FDCI broke up with Lakme/IMG because Percept D'Mark, the event manager promised it more money for a lesser fee but was not able to deliver. Some opine that because Lakme approaches sponsors of the FDCI offering its fashion week for less.
“This year promises to be bigger and better than ever,” says Rathi Vinay Jha, director-general, FDCI. “We have more designers than ever.”
However, industry insiders do not rule out the merger of the FDCI and Lakme.
“In business, there are no egos,” says Anil Chopra of Lakme. “I've been closely associated with the FDCI, most of the members are my friends and we are open to new rules if it suits us financially.”
