Diamonds are forever but diamond workers are not and therefore, Surat Diamond Association (SDA) has launched the insurance scheme for diamond cutters and polishers.

However, diamond workers have given a cold shoulder to this scheme as merely four percent of workers have accepted it.

The scheme is for workers between the age group of 18 and 50 and insurance cover is Rs1 lakh.

Speaking exclusively to fibre2fashion, C P Vanani, Secretary of SDA informed that the association has convinced 26000 to 27000 workers to opt for this insurance scheme as it costs only 66 paise per day. Moreover, it is beneficial for their family members also.

Association has also brought awareness of the scheme by meeting diamond polishers and employers.

In next 3 to 4 months, association expects that 50 percent of workers will be uncer the cover of this insurance scheme.

Vanani added that the scheme is for workers of Surat only and not for entire state.
