"But the organization did not allow it. I guess it's yet another paradigm that needs to be broken here in Brazil. I have gone to several fashion shows for the overweight abroad and they are a big hit in public and media,” says Irani dos Santos.
Although the public in general still prefers the super thin models wearing lingerie that decorate the several stands at Fevest, those who produce for the heavy set have nothing to complain about. Paiol sells 30 thousand pieces/month and distributes to the southeast and south of Brazil.
It also fills orders for one to two thousand pieces for Canada, Portugal and Australia. “The search for sizes 48 to 52 here at Fevest was truly surprising. I was very excited. I have researched the appropriate patterns and fabrics for this segment. I received orders to develop string bikinis and thongs,” says Irani from By Day.
The investment for developing attractive pieces for the overweight has not only provided a good return for the business owners, but has also helped these women to value their bodies and improve their self-esteem in a world where only a minority is allowed on the catwalk.
