Bringing together the beauty of a traditional craft like kantha with western silhouettes, Agnimitra Paul presented a collection called “ Stitch Story – The Kantha Tale” for Spring/Summer 2008 at Lakme Fashion Week.
Here was a collection that had all the beauty and grandeur of kantha but with a revised approach to the craft which turned it into a contemporary design without allowing it to lose its value.
The fabrics were pure cotton, mul-mul, khadi with a dash of chiffon for layers. The colour tones were shades of peach, green and pink on an ivory base.
Small waist coats, skivvies under simple pinafores, asymmetric shirt tunics over summer skirts were dabbled with touches of kantha in floral designs.
The butterfly print added to the delicacy of the garments and an unconventional burst of Bengali couplets on the back of the garments gave the garments an earthy rustic feel.
The layering was randomly done with long sleeved blouses under those with puff sleeves. Layered tunics were teamed with tights and asymmetric wrapped skirts made interesting afternoon attire.
The mix and match of garments gave a glamorous kitschy look to the collection. For evening glamour, Agnimitra added a touch of glitter in the form of badla work.
Saris had scattered kantha embroidery with vintage cholis to match. A pre -stitched sari with a mix of embroidery and fabrics had a distinct futuristic look with a shimmering Lurex petticoat peeping from under it.
The beautiful Jewellery worn by the models for the show was the new age Desire line of collection from Gitanjali.The show stopper was Bollywood star Minisha Lamba who glided down the ramp in an impressive formal creation.
For lovers of craft of the traditional kind the “ Stitch Story – The Kantha Tale” by Agnimitra Paul will have many takers.
