With sales sailing past the landmark £100m figure for the very first time to over £101m (week ending 15 December) John Lewis has reported the highest ever figures in its history and a record for the second consecutive week. Sales were up 7.7% compared with the same week last year.
The week started strongly with John Lewis.com, the retailer's online arm, experiencing a 'Mega Monday' with its biggest ever single day of trading and sales of £2.8 million. Meanwhile footfall across the country has built steadily throughout the week.
Strong sales of handbags and beauty have reflected a move towards 'gifting' this week. Electrical and home technology (EHT) was the best performing directorate with sales up 10% on last year - iPods, eframes and DAB digital radios are all set to star in Christmas stockings this year. Toys have also done well this week and the Fur real Parrot continues to be snapped up by Father Christmases across the country.
John Lewis Oxford Street, the department store group's flagship, also traded strongly across its seven refurbished floors with its Foodhall 15.5% up on last week.
Andy Street, Managing Director, John Lewis said: 'It is 50 years ago to the day that the Partnership first hit a record figure of £1m in a week and it is a sign of great progress that our customers have spent over £100m with us this week. The buzz in our shops across the country is testament to both the range of product and the hard work of our staff serving customers on the ground. This week's top directorate, EHT, continues to have good stock levels so last-minute shoppers will still have plenty to choose from.'
