Ken Sortais was singled out to receive the award by a high-calibre jury that included Antoine de Galbert, founder of Maison Rouge in Paris, Marc-Olivier Wahler, director of the Palais de Tokyo and the editor Jules Maeght. This prize provides him with the opportunity to hold an exhibition of his own at the Palais de Tokyo, in the “Modules Foundation Pierre Bergé et Yves Saint- Laurent “ space in November 2011.
A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (National School of Fine Arts), the work of Ken Sortais tends towards design, painting and installations.
He poses questions about relationships towards everyday life and the affluent society that he interprets in scenes full of humour and childlike references.
Won over by his work, the organisers at Texworld, who were charged with developing the artistic side of the exhibition, invited him to paint on the spot during the last show. This live event was much appreciated by visitors, ever on the lookout for those out-of-the-ordinary experiences at exhibitions. Marie-Armelle de Bouteiller, the director of Texworld, says “she is delighted that Texworld is an exhibition where buyers come for the fabrics and at the same time discover the young talent in fashion and contemporary art”.
