Acrylic staple fibre sees steep fall in China in 2023

Acrylic staple fibre (ASF) prices have witnessed a steep fall in China during the recently concluded year 2023. Although the prices consistently dropped during the first three quarters of last year, they improved in October-December 2023. ASF prices dropped 18.6 per cent to reach $1.96 per kg in the Chinese domestic market. In the local currency, it fell 14.2 per cent during the period. The FOB price of ASF also slipped 15.5 per cent to $2.12 per kg in China. 

In US dollar terms ASF (1.5D*38mm) was noted at $2.41 per kg in the Chinese domestic market during January-March 2023. It eased 3.33 per cent to $2.33 per kg in the April-June quarter. It further lost 20.41 per cent to $1.85 per kg in the third quarter of last year. However, it recovered 5.94 per cent to $1.96 per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. 

In the local currency, it noticed a fall of 14.2 per cent to CNY 141.81 per kg in October-December 2023 compared to the price of CNY 165.32 per kg noted in the first quarter. It eased 0.99 per cent in the second quarter and 17.79 per cent in the third quarter. But the prices gained 5.38 per cent in the last quarter of 2023. 

As per TexPro, the Chinese FOB price of ASF was noted at $2.51 per kg in January-March 2023. It fell 6.37 per cent to $2.35 per kg in the following quarter. The prices further nosedived 15.32 per cent to $1.99 per kg in July-September 2023. However, they gained 6.53 per cent to reach $2.12 per kg in the last quarter. Annually, the FOB price recorded a fall of 15.5 per cent during 2023.
