Last six months of 2006 saw manmade fibre (MMF) industry having a tough time as it restricted production to enhance profit. Monthly MMF production dropped more than 12 percent in the period between August and December, compared to 2005.

Steady overcapacity in Asian markets excluding China and surging raw material costs are major hindrances faced by the sector.

Overall production last year fell 9.8 percent to 730,113 tons, least since 1997, due to these obstacles. Output had decreased 9.5 percent in 2005 from the previous year.
