Malabar potential hub for coir fibre sector - Govt

The Coir Board of Malabar is planning an aggressive campaign to invite potential fibre manufacturers to make use of the vast amount of coconut husks that go waste.
Administration believes that around 620 fibre extract factories can be set up in Malabar, which will open up over 12,500 direct and 25,000 indirect job opportunities.
The region, comprising five districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod, with a total of 4,06,800 hectare under coconut cultivation, has a total annual production of 3,107 million nuts.
Statistics show that only 38 percent of the husks produced in Kerala are utilized, while government is attempting to take this figure to atleast 50 percent.
