The spinning sector in Indonesia is facing a serious shortage of viscose staple fibre (VSF) and the shortage is to the extent of around 100,000 tons, or 33 percent of the annual consumption, against a demand of around 300,000 tons per annum.
This was echoed by the Chairman of Indonesian Textile Association (API), Mr Ade Sudrajat Usman. He said, prices too have continued to surge due to the limited supply of the rayon fibre as the two main producers of VSF are exporting a majority of their output.
There are two VSF manufacturing companies in Indonesia. PT South Pacific Viscose (SPV), which has an installed capacity of 220,000 tons per year and PT Indo Bharat Rayon, which has augmented its VSF production output to 170,000 tons per annum.
Total global production of VSF is around 3.6 million tons, said Ade Sudrajat, but it is very difficult for local spinners to import the fibre as it is in short supply even in international markets, due to the ever increasing consumption of VSF in Asian markets.
