Dawood held two separate meetings on the issue recently which were attended by the secretaries of the textile and commerce divisions and the chairman of the National Tariff Commission, according to Pakistani media reports.There is a need to improve utilisation of man-made fibres and filament in Pakistan's textile value chain, according to Abdul Razak Dawood, advisor to the prime minister on commerce, textile, industry & production and investment. The meetings were also attended by representatives from the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, the All Pakistan Cotton Power loom Association, the Pakistan Silk and Rayon Mills Association and the Pakistan Yarn Merchant Association.
Filament manufactures assured the advisor an investment of $ 125 million to upgrade their capacity.
While globally cotton is now 30 per cent of the total fibre consumption with the rest being man-made fibres and filament, the situation in Pakistan was the opposite, noted Dawood.
Issues related to tariff, regulatory duties, anti-dumping duties, additional custom duties, smuggling and simplification of temporary import schemes for exports were also discussed. (DS)
