In the first four months this year, knitting capped–shoe exports turnover to EU markets reached 19.12 million pairs, worth US $157.23 million, representing year–on–year growth of 50.58 percent and 54.11 percent in term of volume and value, respectively, sources from Vietnamese Ministry of Trade reported.

EU continued to remain top importer of these products, accounting for total of 10.11 million pairs, worth $87.72 million, registering rise of 30.17 and 55.37 percent, respectively, in comparison with January–April 2005 period.

Major surge was recorded in exports to Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Portugal and Hungary.

This is successful effort of Vietnamese footwear industry in order for compensating for losses caused by EC's anti-dumping lawsuits on leather capped – shoes, according to industry experts.

A statistics shows that EU imports about 500 million pairs of knitting materials capped – shoes (comprising sports shoes) each year.

However, Vietnam has a modest market share there, accounting for roughly 40 million pair per year.

Hike in the price of leather capped–shoes, has led to a surge in the demand for knitting capped–shoes from the EU and the experts believe that the exports are definitely to grow further.
