Canvas import of Vietnam's footwear industry witnessed a year–on–year drop of 19.96 percent to reach US $25.37 million in June 2006, but forecast is to bounce up in rest 2006, sources from Ministry of Trade said.

For the first half this year, imports revenue of the goods was $137.2 million, up 6.08 percent over the same period 2005.

Opinion of sharp development in importing canvas in second half of 2006 was based on situation that Vietnamese footwear enterprises have been changing from leather shoes under anti–umping lawsuit by EU to canvas shoes.

Major portion of imported canvas for shoes production is from Asian region, including biggest supplier of Taiwan (accounting for 39.3 percent of entire imports turnover), Japan and Korea which all made strong growth in the period, but increasing declines from China and Hong Kong.

From January to June 2006, imports value by Taiwanese suppliers touched $53.96 million, a 5.03 percent rise year–on-year.

Vietnamese enterprises are trending to increase importing from Japan and Korea because of their increasing demand on high–quality canvas.

Meanwhile, imports turnover from China and Hong Kong declined sharply at 17.85 percent and 29.47 percent, worth only $18.3 million and $5.09 million, respectively.

England and Afghanistan also exported canvas to Vietnam, yet saw 28.2 percent and 80.49 percent decreasing, respectively in the period.
