The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) is urging the European Commission to omit sports footwear with special technology from anti-dumping probes of Chinese and Vietnamese shoe imports.
According to Karl Sedlmeyer, chair of the FESI Trade and Customs committee, "there is no significant quantity of like production of these shoes in the EU".
Sedlmeyer said that footwear with special technology typically sells for higher prices than shoes made in the EU, and so poses no threat to the European footwear industry.
He added: "Investment, production and sourcing of raw materials since the late 1980s dictate that this particular type of sports footwear cannot be produced in significant quantities in the EU."
FESI represents the interests of approximately 1,800 sporting goods manufacturers through its ten National Sporting Goods Industry Federations and its directly affiliated member companies.
