Trade and Industry Ministry of India has been preparing a program on helping its shoes and leather industry to utilize benefits generated from EC's decision of applying anti–dumping lawsuit on leather shoes from China and Vietnam, revealed Vietnam Commercial Affair at India.

A Ministry Official informed that EC's levies of 9.7 percent and 16.5 percent on Chinese goods and 10 percent on Vietnamese ones have been creating favorable opportunities for the Indian industry to develop exports to the European block.

So far, shoes and leather exports turnover to EU is accounting for nearly 63 percent of whole exports turnover of India, while figures at US market show just 12 percent. Therefore, Indian exporters should take these opportunities, added the official.

From a statistic, in 2005 India earned $2.626 billion from export of leather, leather goods and shoes, posted year–on–year increase of 8.42 percent, making up 2.56 percent of all goods exports turnover of the country.

Of these goods, export of shoes totaled $1.042 billion, up by 15.97 percent from same period last year.
