Rebecca Matthias, President and COO of Mothers Work, noted, "When we released our sales for January, we indicated that our stronger-than-expected January sales may well have partially resulted from the much warmer than normal weather during the month, which gave an early boost to sales of Spring merchandise, particularly in comparison to January 2005 which saw weather conditions adverse for overall sales and sales of Spring merchandise.”

"Our sales results for January and February put us on target to achieve our previous second quarter sales guidance of $142.5 to $144.5 million, and our previous second quarter comparable store sales guidance of an increase of 0.5 percent to 2.0 percent. It is also important to note that we are seeing decreased price promotional activity compared to last year and, in fact, we achieved a higher gross margin than last year for both January and February,” she added.

She concluded, "We are optimistic about delivering significantly improved financial results and continuing our strategic transition in fiscal 2006, as we expect to see a continuation of our improved sales trend and realize increased earnings contribution from our new strategic initiatives, including increased contribution from our marketing partnerships, a full year contribution from our Sears and Kohl's initiatives, and the continued rollout of our multi-brand stores.”

Mothers Work is the world's largest designer and retailer of maternity apparel, using its custom TrendTrack(TM) merchandise analysis and planning system as well as its quick response replenishment process to "give the customer what she wants, when she wants it."
