G&K Services announces that it will begin offering evolutionary new antimicrobial-charged garments and towels, BioSmart- the latest enhancement to its ProSura Food Safety Solutions program, aimed at mitigating cross-contamination in the food industry.
The need for antimicrobial charged garments and towels in the food industry led to the partnership between uniform supplier G&K Services and textile manufacturer Milliken & Company. The two companies introduced BioSmart this week at the Food Marketing Institute show in Chicago.
Developed by Milliken, BioSmart is a patent-pending textile technology that binds chlorine(a) molecules to the surface of fabric. Chlorine on the fabric will continue to kill germs after the fabric has been washed. The BioSmart fabric is then used to create garments and towels for the food industry, available only through G&K Services ProSura Food Safety Solutions program.
Independent, outside testing has demonstrated that when BioSmart fabrics are laundered according to care instructions with EPA registered chlorine bleach, the chlorine killed 99.9 percent(b) of common bacteria and viruses, including salmonella choleraesuis, e-coli, staphylococcus aureus and hepatitis A.
"Prevention is the best solution to the ongoing problem of contamination outbreaks that concern the food industry," said Scott Wallace, G&K's senior vice president, marketing. "Our ProSura program was a giant step forward in mitigating cross-contamination through employee uniforms, and now our BioSmart garments and towels will provide an extra layer of protection."
