Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute [GJRTI] plans to provide self employment and jobs for rural jobless youth.

Asoka Jayawardana, Chairman of GJRTI informed of their plans to train over 1000 youth this year as gem cutters, polishers, gem setters , gemologists, Jewellery manufacturers and heat treatment technicians.

Jayawardana said that, trainees are provided direct jobs with support of private sector.

Local gem related industries need skilled workers. Most rural youth do not prefer this industry as they cannot waste their time in training period without allowance or salary, he said.

Presently some Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) are assisting to train rural youth in gemology.

NGOs are provided financial facility which facilitates in paying a monthly allowance to trainees, Jayawardana explained.

The GJRTI was established under Government gazette notification in 1995.

The main purpose was to provide research and training facilities for promotion and development of both gem and jewellery industries.

GJRTI has decided to conduct its training courses in seven training centres at Kandy, Matale, Hasalaka, Kegalle, Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura and Galle.

He invited unemployed youth and school drop outs to attend these training courses.

Jayawardana said that GJRTI has plans to provide financial facilities for trainees who complete their courses.

They can take advantage of financial scheme to purchase gem cutting, polishing and jewellery manufacturing equipments, he said.
