The industries and commerce department of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government has roped in US company Amazon for promoting and trading exclusive handicrafts and handloom products from the state. An Amazon team met principal secretary of industries and commerce Shailendra Kumar, other officials, industry representatives and artisans recently in Srinagar.

The Amazon tie-up will offer a global market to the local artisans, media reports from Kashmir quoted Kumar as saying. The state government is working to have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Amazon.

Once the formal MoU is signed, the e-commerce giant can also educate and train weavers and artisans to directly sell their products, include shawls, silk, wool, handicrafts, to customers in India and in international markets on their online platform, Kumar added. (DS)
