Driven by soaring demand from traditional western markets like the US and Europe and emerging markets like Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, India's handicraft exports for the month of July 2011 grew to US$ 155 million, registering a rise of around 29 percent over July 2010's exports worth US$ 120 million.
Registering a growth of 49 percent, shawls were among the handicraft items that showed a maximum growth in exports during July.
The initial four months of the current 2011-12 fiscal saw handicraft exports rising by 20.5 percent to US$ 711 million, as against same period of last fiscal.
If the tend continues, handicraft exports for the current fiscal are estimated to cross US$ 2.7 billion. Last fiscal, handicraft exports grew to US$ 2.3 billion, registering a year-on-year rise of 26 percent.
Saharanpur, Narsapur, Moradabad, Jodhpur and Jaipur are the key handicraft centres of India where about one million artisans work to meet the demand of international markets.
Around 60 percent of India's overall handicraft exports are to the US and Europe.
